Libertarian Voter Registration up Hundreds of Percent in Nebraska

Here in Indiana (home base for the LTC), a voter cannot register by party. If you SAY you are a member of a party, you are one. The closest one comes is if you vote in a closed-party primary for the R’s or D’s (L’s excluded). But there are some fantastic numbers for new registered L’s out of the LP of Nebraska that are shades of what is happening in other states. Thanks to Nebraska Chair David Hunt for providing these numbers. Registered Voters by Party, Statewide (Total Population – 1,842,641): Party October 2008 August 2012 % of Change Republican  558,465 549,920 –  1.53% Democrat 392,943 367,963 –  6.36% Nebraska 8,625 0 –  100.00% Green 1,041 0 –  1.53% Nonpartisan   195,507 221,952 + 13.53% Libertarian   453 2,503 + 452.54% Registered Voters by Party, Douglas County (Omaha) (Total Population – 408,958): Party October 2008 August 2012 % of Change Republican  123,505 123,076 –  0.35% Democrat 127,158 123,813 –  2.63% Nebraska 3,048 0 –  100.00% Green 333 0 –  1.53% Nonpartisan   61,069 71,372 + 16.87% Libertarian   174 851 + 389.08% Tweet

How libertarianism Helps the Poor

For most libertarians, their first stumbling block to the philosophy was how those in need will receive assistance. Even those that count themselves as party founders still probably get a little hot flash of anger when someone calls them “heartless” or “selfish.” Libertarians are usually driven to the philosophy of non-intervention because they’ve witnessed first-hand how a government program, policy, or regulation is negatively affecting their community and they want to make a change. Matt Zwolinski has written a great article at the Daily Caller entitled, “How libertarianism Helps the Poor.” When I tell people that I work for the Libertarian Party, I often hear: “Everybody knows that libertarians are greedy capitalists who favor the maximization of profit above all else. “Taxation is theft!” they cry, but the exploitation of the working classes fails to elicit any similar moral outrage. Libertarians, everybody knows, care about the rich to the utter neglect of the poor and vulnerable.” Zwolinski’s article gives 3 fantastic rebuttals to this notion. 1. “The first mistake is to believe the government when it claims that its policies are intended … Continue reading

LPIN Candidate Package

I’ve put together a package for Libertarian candidates in Indiana. The rules for a Libertarian in Indiana are totally different than R’s and D’s, and many clerks may not know the laws and procedures that we follow. Also, most of our candidates are running for the first time, and are not full time candidates. This is almost every file you’ll need to get started, as well as some explanations of our process. View it here. While this is for Indiana, other states could copy this to help their candidates start on the right foot. Tweet

Universal Health Care in America: The Recently Proposed Bills

The fight to reform health care is reaching an all-time climax. Thus, there are several pieces of legislation which various government officials have proposed. Find out libertarian solutions to health care here at the Cato Institute and Mises.org. In a speech before the American Medical Association on June 15th, President Obama mentioned that wanted the following points to be a part of the new system: Those who want to keep their existing health insurance plan will be allowed to do so. Instead of having paper medical records, President Obama wants to switch to an electronic system so that important medical data can be accessed by medical professionals anywhere, anytime. More money will be invested in preventative care. As part of this, he wants to encourage Americans to take charge of their own health care by living a healthier lifestyle. To incentive Americans to take better care of themselves, doctors would be required to tell patients what their risk factors are. Those who continually have low cholesterol and blood pressure will receive reduced premiums. How doctors are paid will also be … Continue reading

One Party Rule = FAIL

“Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule – and both commonly succeed, and are right.” ~H.L. Mencken, 1956 “The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension… is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism.” – George Washington, Farewell Address, 1796 Tweet

Benjamin Franklin Quote

“I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I travelled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.” – Ben Franklin Tweet
